LastPass Frequently Asked Questions

Can UCOP access or retrieve the information I store in LastPass?

With the exception of shared folders (i.e. passwords you have specifically chosen to share or have shared with you), no one else at UCOP can see your credentials (usernames and passwords). Passwords stored in LastPass are encrypted—even LastPass.com staff cannot see them.

What do I do if a password is compromised?

LastPass proactively checks to identify any email that have been potentially compromised and will notify you of these. If you receive such a notification, you should notify the security team at soc@ucop.edu.

What if I already use LastPass personally?

LastPass business and personal are two separate accounts. If you log into one on your web browser and need a password from the other, you will need to log out and then back in using a different email address. A way to mitigate the inconvenience of this is to use your LastPass business account with one browser and use your LastPass personal account with a different browser.

What if I already have a LastPass account using my UCOP email address?

If you already have a free personal account under your ucop.edu email address, you’ll get a new Enterprise account with no passwords in it.  You’ll need to export all your passwords from your personal account and import them to your new Enterprise account that is using your UPN address (jdoe@ucop.edu ).  You can still log into your personal account under your firstname.lastname@ucop.edu email address. The Enterprise account will use the UPN address for login.  You’ll continue to have two separate LastPass accounts unless you delete your personal account through the Settings à Your LastPass Account.

What happens to my LastPass account if I leave employment at UCOP?

If you leave UCOP, you will lose access to any passwords you have stored in your UCOP LastPass Account. For this reason, we strongly discourage storing personal passwords in your UCOP work account. If you have created a family plan account under your ucop.edu address, you will be given the option to convert to a paid account.

What happens when the LastPass website is down? Can I still log in?

If you are logging in via the LastPass browser extension, it will automatically switch to offline mode, and you'll still be able to view your stored data.

What if I’m already using a different password manager?

If you are using a different password manager for your personal passwords, you can continue to use it. For work-related passwords, please use LastPass. One option is to use one browser for personal use and one for business use, and to only put the LastPass extension on the business computer.

What if I need help or troubleshooting?

If you are having issues or have other questions about LastPass, contact the IT Service Desk. Email to servicedesk@ucop.edu is the preferred method. Other contact information for Service Desk can be found online. Note that UCOP only officially supports LastPass on Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari.
