UC Hispanic-Serving Institutions Initiative
As a systemwide learning community, a critical component of our work is to gather at different venues to discuss our work as UC HSIs and UC emerging HSIs. A listing of upcoming and past events follows.
Webinar: UC's Role as a Hispanic-Serving Research Institution
On May 5, 2021, the UC HSI Initiative will host a webinar presentation of key findings from the Initiative's first report, "La Lucha Sigue: The Role of the University of California as a Hispanic-Serving Research Institution." Panelists will discuss UC's unique role as a research-intensive, public HSI system in the broader HSI conversation. This webinar is the first in a series of learning opportunities from the Initiative.
UC HSI Campus Showcase 2019, Hosted by UC Santa Cruz
The campus showcase provided a deeper look at UC Santa Cruz and how the campus developed an approach and a series of interventions to become a racially just HSI. The showcase was created so that participants could explore UC Santa Cruz's successes and challenges and could think collectively about what it means to be a UC HSI campus. Presentations included an overview of the UCSC HSI framework, HSI grant-funded projects in the areas of STEM, and sessions on advising, Transfer Pathways and racial equity analyses, as well as evaluation strategies to measure impact.
UC HSI Research Panel and Presentation at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Annual Conference 2019
At the 2019 annual HACU Conference held in Chicago, several members of the advisory board presented as a panel on HSI-related research and best practices at their home campuses. Presenting campuses included UC Merced, UC Davis, UC Irvine and UC Santa Cruz.
UC HSI Annual Retreat 2018, Hosted by UC San Diego
In November 2018, the second UC HSI Annual Retreat was held in San Diego. Highlights of the meeting included presentations by leading higher education scholars, such as Gina Garcia, and the strengthening of communication and collaboration with advocacy groups (e.g., HACU and the Campaign for College Opportunity).
UC HSI Annual Retreat 2017, Hosted by UC Riverside
Through the Office of Diversity and Engagement, the UC Office of the President hosted the first systemwide UC Hispanic-Serving Institutions retreat in 2017. The two-day event featured panel discussions with leading scholars in the field of higher education and members of advocacy organizations (e.g., HACU) and the U.S. Department of Education. All 10 UC campuses were represented at this meeting. This event was the catalyst for formally launching the UC HSI Initiative.
