Pre-conference Workshops

In 2018, the CAP Forum offered three optional pre-conference workshops on Monday, May 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. The sessions explored professional development topics in greater length, facilitated by expert practitioners. All pre-conference workshops were included in the registration fee. Each session was capped at 50 participants.

Workshop 1: Taking Charge of Your Career Development

Each person’s career path is theirs alone to envision and navigate. Don’t miss this informative pre-conference session, presenting professional-development strategies and tools. Participants will learn how to develop an effective career plan and expand their professional skillset. Also during this session, attendees will benefit from meeting with a LinkedIn expert to help them “Rock their Profiles,” take an updated professional headshot photo and review compelling LinkedIn profiles.

Presenters:
Kelly Howard, Manager, Talent Management and Executive Recruitment Services, UC Office of the President
Sally Gelini, Senior Recruiter, UC Office of the President
Allen Hom, Senior Customer Success Manager, Key Accounts, LinkedIn

Workshop 2: Fostering Inclusion and Access: LGBTQ Students at the Intersections

This pre-conference workshop will explore how we competently address sexual orientation, gender identity and access for students claiming multiple identities. These might encompass race, ethnicity, socio-economic standing, citizenship, first-generation status or a combination thereof. We will work to build and update competency across different fields to foster the use of welcoming and inclusive LGBTQ language and resources; to identify specific actions that can advance access; and to create effective dialogue with high school outreach programs, community college programs and post-baccalaureate pipeline programs.

Presenters:
Billy Curtis, Director, Gender Equity Resource Center, UC Berkeley
Klint Jaramillo, Director, LGBT Resource Center, UC San Francisco
Nancy Jean Tubbs, Director, LGBT Resource Center, UC Riverside

Participants will use Spitfire’s Smart Chart® planning tool and will learn Spitfire’s values-based messaging system, strategies for identifying the most appropriate tactics to reach specific audiences, and tips for incorporating evaluation into communication planning. The session will comprise a combination of presentation, discussion and hands-on exercises that participants can apply to their K–12 and transfer work.
