Initiative Goals

Collaboration, Not Competition

UC campuses are coming together to collaborate rather than compete. GLN builds the structure for systemwide cooperation:  sharing resources, recognizing credit across campuses, and aligning best practices. From raising student awareness to streamlining scheduling, enrollment, and credit verification, we’re making it easier for students to thrive and for campuses to support them.

Innovating Language Learning

We’re convening experts from across UC to reimagine how languages can be taught online. Using evidence-based design principles and embedded assessment strategies, GLN is developing high-quality courses that deliver consistent learning outcomes. Every course will be tested, evaluated, and refined — setting a new standard for effective online language instruction.

A Stronger UC Online

Our digital platform should empower, not frustrate. That’s why we’re investing in upgrades to UC Online, enhancing search tools and integrating more seamlessly with campus registration systems. Together with registrar’s offices across UC, we’re building a platform that makes discovering and enrolling in world languages simple, intuitive, and student-centered.

Measuring Impact

Success is predicated on lasting impact. GLN will rigorously evaluate its progress using clear metrics and continuous feedback loops, ensuring that every stage, from collaboration to course delivery, is measured, improved, and sustained.

UC GLN Overview

The GLN initiative aims to expand foreign language study among UC undergraduates.

Proposed Timeline

The GLN initiative is launching in phases, building infrastructure and collaboration first, then scaling to a systemwide model for language instruction.
