UC's Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy
December 22, 2021: UC is pleased to inform you that we have issued the new UC Policy on Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation. This follows many iterations to incorporate revisions to the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (CalNAGPRA) under AB 2836 and AB 275, and important feedback from numerous stakeholders, including California Native American Tribes.
The University is committed to the repatriation of Native American human remains and cultural items in accordance with the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), its accompanying regulations, and CalNAGPRA. The fundamental importance of facilitating the repatriation of Native American and Native Hawaiian human remains and cultural items undergirds the Policy.
Issuance of this policy, by no means, represents a conclusion to UC’s efforts. We believe this policy will serve as an effective base for repatriation to bring Native American and Native Hawaiian ancestors and their cultural items home.
