Overview

The University of California’s housing portfolio plays a vital role in supporting the University’s mission — fostering student success, recruiting and retaining employees, and building stronger campus communities.

UC’s student housing provides affordable on-campus living options for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The system currently offers over 122,000 student beds, with an additional 13,000 new beds planned by 2030 to help meet future demand and improve affordability. With support from the State Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program, UC will deliver 9 projects with over 7,000 new beds.

UC’s workforce housing provides rental and for-sale housing for faculty and staff, helping campuses compete in California’s challenging housing markets. The system currently includes approximately 4,000 employee housing units, with ongoing work to explore additional opportunities.

The Office of the President fosters collaboration with campuses on student and workforce housing policies, gathers systemwide data to help define needs and potential opportunities, and supports the development of new housing through systemwide policy guidance and coordination.
