The 10th annual Student Leadership Forum (SLF) will convene 90 students from the MESA, Puente and EAOP programs at the State Capitol for leadership training and meetings with state legislators.The forum is sponsored by UCOP's Department of Diversity and Engagement. Meals, hotel and travel are covered for the event. Each program is allocated 30 student slots. Most MESA and Puente students will be selected from Northern California areas. We encourage all EAOP, MESA and Puente representatives to carefully consider students who can best represent programs at this important event. Chaperones for students under 18 will be required.

WHAT: The 10th Annual Student Leadership Forum, hosted by the University of California’s Department of Diversity and Engagement, provides leadership training and offers opportunities for students to represent their programs as they meet legislators at the State Capitol during a two-day leadership conference.

WHO: 90 high school, community college and university students from UC's college preparation programs: Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP), Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) and the Puente Project, as well as staff and teachers will participate.

WHERE: The Student Leadership Forum will take place at the Embassy Suites Sacramento – Riverfront Promenade, 100 Capitol Mall, and include legislative visits at the State Capitol Building.

WHEN: From Tuesday, May 12 at 10 a.m. through Wednesday, May 13 at 3:30 p.m.

Q: What is the purpose of the Student Leadership Forum?

The Student Leadership Forum provides students with leadership training and offers an opportunity for students to use these skills as they represent EAOP, MESA and Puente during visits and meetings with state leaders. Students will attend workshops on leadership, communication and the political process. Most importantly, students will learn how to develop their voices in the public policy arena and gain knowledge of how state politics affects their daily lives.

Programs like EAOP, MESA and Puente make an important difference for thousands of students and families who have little or no experience in higher education. The Student Leadership Forum gives a chance for state leaders to hear directly from student constituents about how these programs are supporting students to become California’s future professional workforce.

Q: How do students register for the Student Leadership Forum?

EAOP, MESA and Puente will provide the registration materials for their respective students and representatives.

Q: How and when do students interact with legislators and state leaders?

Students receive intensive training and hear speakers on the first day of the conference. On the second day, teams of participants to visit local assembly and senate representatives. The legislative visits are a major highlight of the conference for both state leaders and student participants.
