Hopland – Mendocino Biochar Network

UCANR’s Hopland Research and Extension Center, working with the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District and All Power Labs, has installed biogasifiers for wood chip gasification of fire scar materials. These biogasifiers produce electricity (for both grid and emergency power applications) as well as a unique, high temperature biochar. The seed award supports the study of this biochar as a carbon sequestration pathway and as an agricultural amendment via composting. The seed award also supports the development of a network of local biochar buyers to facilitate greater market acceptance and demand for biochar.
