Medical Care Quick Tips

  1. When you need care, start by visiting the student health center (SHC), except in an emergency. Check out the glossary of terms to see what's considered an emergency. In an emergency, call 911 or go directly to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.
  2. You need a referral for care outside the SHC. Referrals are not required for emergency room care, urgent care clinic visits, pediatric care, obstetrics services, gynecological care or LiveHealth Online virtual visits.

UC Hastings students: For routine care, start at Carbon Health and access their onsite or virtual health services. This is the first stop for care. However, if you need to see a specialist, be sure to get a referral from your primary care clinician in the Anthem Blue Cross Prudent Buyer PPO network.
UC Irvine students: During winter break when the SHC is closed, you can visit an Anthem Blue Cross primary care clinician without a referral. However, if you need to see a specialist, be sure to get a referral from your primary care clinician in the Anthem Blue Cross Prudent Buyer PPO network.
UC Merced students: You don’t need a referral to receive medical care outside the SHC or when you are away from campus. However, if you need to see a specialist, be sure to get a referral from your primary care clinician in the Anthem Blue Cross Prudent Buyer PPO network.
UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara students: You must get an SHC referral for care outside the SHC if you are within a 50-mile radius from campus.

  1. Download the StudentHealth app to keep your medical ID card handy. You will need to show your Anthem Blue Cross (Anthem) ID card when you get care or prescriptions outside the SHC. Download StudentHealth for Android devices on Google Play or StudentHealth for iOS devices on the App Store.
  2. Use network providers to save money on care outside the SHC. Network providers will cost you less. Your most expensive decision would be to see a provider who is not part of the Anthem Blue Cross Prudent Buyer (PPO) network.
