Experts serving on the front lines of the COVID-19 outbreak discuss the pandemic and the University's response.

  • Dr. Carrie L. Byington, executive vice president of UC Health, addressed how UC Health has prepared for, and responded to COVID-19, including the challenges that UC Health has confronted in responding to the outbreak, and how UC Health has been able to maximize its response through coordination with local and state health officials. 

  • Dr. Robert A. Cherry, chief medical and qualify officer at UCLA Health, addressed hospital preparedness, including how UCLA achieved surge capacity, to be well-positioned to treat COVID-19 patients.  

  • Dr. Steven Gonias, distinguished professor and chairperson of the Department of Pathology at UC San Diego, and chief of pathology services at UC San Diego Health, addressed lab capacity and UC Health system's efforts to develop, scale up and administer COVID-19 diagnostic clinical tests. 

  • Dr. Joseph DeRisi, professor of biochemistry and biophysics at UCSF and co-president of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, addressed the development of serology tests for COVID-19 to test for antibodies in the blood, thereby allowing for assessing who has previously contracted COVID-19 and resolved from it, as well as efforts underway within the UC system to discover a COVID-19 vaccine.
