Jared will analyze the potential for UC owned properties including UCANR Research and Extension Centers, the Berkeley Forests, and the UC Natural Reserve System to participate in the offset market. To our knowledge, the management of carbon on these lands has not been a priority of the CNI, yet increasing carbon sequestration on these lands may be one way for UC to offset its own emissions. The goal of this project will be to 1) explore the feasibility of UC lands to enter the carbon offset market by comparing their current state and management history to lands that have already been granted offsets, 2) analyzing past land management actions on UC lands and identifying new management approaches that may store more carbon on the landscape, 3) disseminating my results throughout UC through presentations, written materials, and my experience as a photojournalist. I will measure success of this project by 4) tracking the dissemination of my research results through CNI and UC broadly and 5) identifying measurable UC policy changes in land management as a result of my project.
