Chancellors' Forum in
Washington, DC - April 2001

The annual UC Chancellors' Forum was held in Washington, D.C on April 23-24 coinciding with the annual Association of American Universities (AAU) meeting. This year set a precedent with all ten Chancellors and President Atkinson attending to meet with national leaders and advance issues of importance to the university. This year, the messages carried to the Administration and members of the California Congressional delegation included the need for a balanced investment in federal research funding, a stable source of funding for graduate medical education, and support for graduate student tax credits. The event also included a luncheon with members of the Washington, D.C. press corps.

Chancellors participated in approximately thirty federal meetings both inCongress and the Administration. Highlights included: meeting with the Secretary of Education Rod Paige to discuss year round Pell grants, K-12 outreach initiatives, and other student aid priorities for UC; with Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez) Ranking Member on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce to discuss similar K-12 concerns; with Rep. Chris Cox (R-Irvine), Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-San

Francisco) and Chairman Bill Thomas (R-Bakersfield) of the Ways and Means Committee.

On April 9-10, the UC Davis College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences hosted 17 congressional staffers on an educational tour around campus and to the Napa Valley. Congressional staff with responsibility for agriculture issues from the offices of Reps. Farr (D-Santa Cruz), Issa (R-San Clemente), Lewis (R-edlands), Pombo (R-Stockton), Radanovich (R-Mariposa), Thompson (D-Napa), Ose (R-Davis), Calvert (R-Riverside), Condit (D-Modesto), and Senators Boxer and Feinstein participated in the two-day tour of UC Davis and the Napa Valley. In addition, key stafffrom the House and Senate Appropriations Committees and House Agriculture Committee were in attendance. UCD faculty gave presentations on several research areas including invasive species, agricultural genomics, and Pierce's Disease. The staffers visited a genomics laboratory, the Oakville experimental vineyard, and UCD's Department of Viticulture and Enology winery.

UC San Francisco's
Academic Medical Center -
January 2001

On January 16 - 17, 2001 UC San Francisco, working with UC FGR, hosted nine congressional staffers for a Project Medical Education (PME) visit. PME is a partnership of the Association of American Medical Colleges and a coalition of America's leading medical schools and teaching hospitals working together to inform Congresson how medical education benefits the nation.

Key Congressional staff with responsibility for health issues from the offices of Reps. Pelosi (D-San Francisco), Matsui (D-Sacramento), Woolsey (D-Marin), Eshoo (D-Palo Alto), Markey (D-MA), Gephardt (D-MO), and Senators Feinstein (D-CA), Boxer (D-CA) and Chafee (R-RI) participated in a two-day intensive workshop that simulated the process of becoming a physician. The staffers received an overview of the UCSF Academic Medical Center, medical school curriculum and graduate medical education (GME). They attended classes, joined faculty on rounds at different departments of the teaching hospitals, including ICU and Radiology, and visited with medical students and residents. They also toured the new UCSF Mission Bay facility, and learned about UCSF's medical partnerships by visiting San Francisco General Hospital, Mt. Zion's Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Veterans' Administration Hospital. At the conclusion, staffers received a long white coat embroidered with their name to mark their graduation from the PME program.
