UC Orientation: The Power and Promise of 10 |
| |
|
| |
The University of California can build its excellence and expand its impact by moving forward as “1 University” that harnesses the power and the promise of its 10 world-class campuses on two tracks: “above the line” in coordinated academic planning and “below the line” in greater operational efficiency.
 |
| |
UC Orientation: Strengthening UC Relationships |
| |
|
| |
The “Power and Promise of 10” model presents new opportunities for strengthening key relationships with constituent groups. With the help of targeted messaging and personal outreach, the University strives to build understanding among the Governor and the Legislature, alumni, federal policymakers, industry partners, and community leaders that the University is addressing the critical needs of California and deserves greater support. |

Blumenthal uses his unique vantage point to offer his perspective and specific prescription on how to ensure that the shared governance relationship thrives and even blossoms for the betterment of students, staff and faculty at each UC campus. |

Getting (More of) What you Want: Negotiation Strategies and Tactics (Part 1) |
| |
|
Margaret Neale, Professor, Stanford University |
| |
|
Everyone negotiates. Yet many people think of negotiation only as an interaction between a buyer and a seller. Negotiation is a much more ubiquitous process used to resolve differences and allocate scarce resources. Even though we may negotiate multiple times per day, it is clear that we (and others) leave resources on-the-table, agree to contracts and outcomes that are not in our best interest, and do little in the way of systematic planning or assessment of the quality of negotiated agreements. The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with a set of negotiation tools that can enhance the quality and rationality of their agreements. |

Nurturing the Next Generation of Academic Physicians |
| |
|
Vivian Reznik, Associate Dean, School of Medicine and Professor, Pediatrics, UC San Diego |
| |
|
Over the past ten years, there has been increasing concern nationally about the future of academic medicine faculty. At UCSD SOM, the environment for our faculty was examined by interviewing junior and senior faculty, conducting a Gender Equity Study and a Campus Climate Survey. In response to data collected, programmatic and structural changes were implemented. The outcome of this work will be presented as part of our plan to support and develop the next generation of leadership at UCSD SOM and academic medicine nationally.

Styles of Executive Management in Corporations and Universities |
| |
|
Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor, UC San Diego |
| |
|
As more women make the transition to leadership positions within academia and industry, the spotlight has shifted (somewhat!) from the near total absence of women in executive decision making to the quality of their contributions and the operational modes by which they handle authority. Boards and Trustees are becoming more explicit in their expectations for executive performance, and many of the same behaviors that are praised (or at least viewed as acceptable) in male leaders are questioned in women. Recent examples of such gender-differentiated responses will be presented, along with practical advice on how to respond to such challenges.

Leading Change in California’s Multi-Ethnic, Multi-Cultural Environment |
| |
|
Eddie Island, UC Regent |

Today's California does not look, feel, sound or taste like the California of the 1970s. There is no return to that past. The future of California is here now. As a land-grant institution, UC must lead the change necessary to make all of California's residents healthy, educated and gainfully employed. |
