New UCOP Office Building Update as of October 8, 1997
This is to provide you with an update on the new UCOP headquarters building
in downtown Oakland. Information provided below updates that provided in
the last bulletin, distributed on July 21, 1997.
OVERALL PROJECT PROGRESS AND SCHEDULE
The project continues to proceed well. The exterior panels of the building
will be erected by the end of the month. During the next two months the
panels will be aligned, welded and sealed. Exterior glass installation
will be started at the end of the month and continue into January. Roofing
installation is scheduled to be completed in early November.
Workstation furniture is being ordered for delivery beginning in February.
Responses to an RFP for a new phone system are due in the middle of this
month with a decision on a new phone system to be made by the end of November.
The project continues to be scheduled for completion on April 23, 1998,
with the first move in to occur the weekend of April 25/26.
DECISION ON LEASED SPACE
At the end of last week the Regents approved execution of a lease with the
Kaiser Center to house the majority of those not moving into the new
building. The recommendation to sign a new lease with the Kaiser Center
followed a search for the most cost effective space and a long series of
negotiations with a number of suitable sites. The University will be
leasing half of the third floor (to house the Computer Center and
networking and computer operations staff), the entire fourth, fifth and
seventh floors and half of the sixth floor. The seventh floor will be
leased in its entirety rather than the sixth floor because its current
build out is more suitable to the needs of the units staying in the
building. Over the next few months, we will be working with the affected
departments and the architectural firm of Gordon Chong and Partners to
identify the specific locations of those to be housed in the Kaiser Center.
