Q. What does a "good" seismic rating mean?
A. "Good" is the highest seismic rating the University
has for buildings. The rating deals primarily with safety of the occupants rather than the protection of the
building.
Q.What are the names of the firms on the development team?
A. The developer is Lankford and Associates, Inc. The contractor
is Hensel Phelps. The architect for the shell and core of the building
is Kaplan, McLaughlin, Diaz and the architect for the interior
is Gordon H. Chong and Associates.
Q. Has it been decided who will be moving into the new building?
A. The decision has not been made yet. The architects are doing
"blocking and stacking" now, which deals with how everyone
fits into the building given each departments size and what adjacencies
they have requested. When that is finished we will have a better
idea of who will be going into the new building.
Q. Where will those not going into the new building be located?
A. We are looking at space in Kaiser as well as space in other
buildings in the area.
Q.What is planned for the roof garden space?
A. We are starting to look into this and we would like staff input
on what they would like. Please send comments to building@ucop.edu. Comments are needed by October 15.
Q.Will the roof garden have public access?
A. Under our agreement with the City of Oakland, the adjacent
hotel, when built, will have access to the roof garden, but there
will not be public access.
Q. Will there be a security point at the entrance to our building
from the roof garden.
A. Yes. This will be activated only after an adjacent building is completed and there is access by non-UCOP employees.
Q. Will there be a place inside the building where employees can
eat their lunch?
A. Yes, hopefully adjacent to the roof garden, we can provide space for such use.
Q.Will there be trees at the street level of the building?
A.Yes.
Q.Will we be able to keep our present phone numbers?
A. We do not know what phone system we will have in our new building
or if we will be able to keep our phone numbers.
Q.Will the Key System building (a historically designated building adjacent to our construction site) undergo seismic bracing?
A. The Key System building will undergo renovations and seismic
bracing as part of the development of the adjacent hotel or office building.
Q. If offices are built on the exterior walls, how will natural
light get to the cubicles on the interior?
A. The office walls will have either frosted glass or glass panels
which will let the light into the interior spaces.
Q. Will there be a post office sub station in the building?
A. No, but there is one at 14th and Clay streets which we have
been told is moving into the new Federal Building, slightly closer to the new
UCOP building, and there is another one on Franklin between 14th and 15th,
two or three blocks away.
