                                         Effective May 16, 1980

            ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDELINES FOR CAMPUS IMPLEMENTATION

OF THE REGENTAL POLICY ON ENDOWED CHAIRS

The written procedures of each campus regarding endowed chairs
shall be consistent with the policy of The Regents and with the
following guidelines.

1. Minimum Corpus

A minimum corpus shall be established and maintained, which
may vary by academic field, but in no case shall be less
than the minimum ($250,000) specified in the Regental
     policy.

2. Campus Review

Appropriate academic administrators must be involved in
discussions concerning establishment of an endowed chair,
and the appropriate committee of the Academic Senate must be
consulted on the scope and subject area of the proposed
     chair.

3. Appointment to the Chair

An endowed chair may be filled by one individual for an
indefinite period or successively by a series of individuals
appointed for prescribed periods, unless otherwise provided
in the terms of the gift. A person who is a tenured faculty
member of the unit to which the chair is assigned may be
appointed by the Chancellor on the advice of the appropriate
committee of the Academic Senate. If a person outside that
unit is to be appointed, appointment policies and procedures
shall be in accordance with University policies and regula-
tions for regular tenured appointments or for visiting
appointments, as appropriate. In carrying out the search
for candidates, attention shall be paid to the campus's
affirmative action goals, and candidates from outside the
University should be considered as well as those from within
     the University.

4. Use of the Endowment Income

Income made available to holders of endowed chairs shall be
used to support their teaching and research activities, in
accordance with University regulations and according to a
budget recommended annually by the chair holder to the
Department Chair and approved by the appropriate Dean and/or
Chancellor in the normal budgetary process.

If funding for establishment of an endowed chair is
committed in the form of a pledge or is subject to
successful conclusion of a fund-raising campaign and if an
appointment to the chair is made before the pledge is paid
in full or before the campaign goal is met, only the income
earned on principal which was in the fund during the
preceding fiscal year will be used to fund the chair.

5. Annual Reporting

Each chair holder shall annually submit a brief narrative to
the Department Chair along with a budget request. These
narratives should be retained by the Chair or Dean for use
in preparing special reports on endowed chairs that may be
     needed from time to time.
