MAJOR DONORS LIST
The Major Donors List, which is presented in summary form to The
Regents at each business meeting, is intended to call special
attention to significant gifts to the University. On request,
Development Policy and Administration, Office of the President,
will provide a copy of the Major Donors List in its full form.
Campus Reports. Each campus is to provide Development Policy and
Administration with a monthly list of its major donors. The list
is to include gifts to both The Regents and the Campus Founda-
tion, each separately identified. The dollar threshold for
inclusion of private grants and gifts (including pledges but
excluding pledge payments) from both individuals and organiza-
tions in the Major Donors List is $100,000 and over.
A model page from a recent copy of the Major Donors List follows.
Please note the following:
- For pledges, the amount of the gift should be followed by
the letter p;
- For nonmonetary gifts, the purpose of the gift should be
preceded by an asterisk;
- For real property, the amount of the gift should be
followed by two asterisks;
- For deferred gifts, the amount of the gift should be
followed by a plus sign;
- For deferred gifts held by external trustees, the amount
of the gift should be followed by two plus signs;
- Gifts to the Foundation should be identified by the number
(#) sign;
- Donors' names should be verified for accuracy and (in the
case of individuals) listed last name first;
- Purpose should include the general purpose of the gift
(e.g., research, scholarships), followed by the benefiting
program or department; for nonmonetary gifts, the type of
gift (e.g., equipment, artwork) may be substituted for the
general purpose of the gift.
How Do You List . . . ? For purposes of the Major Donors List,
trusts that are vehicles for the transfer of assets from an
individual (e.g., charitable remainder unitrusts) are counted as
individual donors; trusts that are private foundations (e.g., the
Davies Charitable Trust) are considered organizations.
Professionals who are incorporated (e.g., Dr. John Q. Gooddoctor,
Inc.) are reported as individual donors rather than
organizations.
Gifts to support groups are not included in the Major Donors List
unless the gift is deposited directly with The Regents or the
Campus Foundation. Otherwise, gifts from support groups are
counted as gifts to The Regents or the Campus Foundation at the
time the support group transfers funds, and for purposes of the
Major Donors List, the support group is then considered the donor
(See also Section II: B.1, Policy on University Support Groups).
Funds transferred from Campus Foundation or support groups for
payment of operating expenses through The Regents are not
considered gifts.
