                                  PLAQUES

The current Regents' policy on plaques, adopted on March 8, 1940
and reaffirmed by The Regents' Committee on Grounds and Buildings
on October 25, 1956, reads as follows:

The Regents of the University of California have declared
that it is their policy to permit the installation of
plaques, cornerstones, inscriptions, or other commemorative
displays only on or in such buildings of the University of
California as are erected with funds provided as outright
gifts by donors and which have been indicated by the donors
as memorials to specifically named individuals.

The Regents have determined that this policy is applicable
to the placement of plaques in portions of buildings and the
naming of those portions after individuals, as well as to
the use of plaques to honor an individual without intent to
name the building or portion of building after the
     individual honored.

Generally, such installation of plaques and other suitable com-
memorations does not require Regents' approval and is within the
authority of Chancellors to approve. If installation of plaques
is contemplated in relation to the naming of a University
property, program, or facility, approval of such installation by
the President or The Regents is implicit in the naming approval
required as set forth in the Policy on Naming University Proper-
ties, Programs, and Facilities, October 19, 1979 (see Section
III: C.1) and the Procedures for Submission of Proposals for
Naming University Properties, Programs, and Facilities, August 1,
1989 (see Section III: C.2).
