CHANCELLORS
LABORATORY DIRECTORS
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT--ADMINISTRATION
Dear Colleagues:
As you are all aware, the Surgeon General of the United States has determined that cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of illness and premature death in the nation. Moreover, there is increasing evidence from research indicating that non-smokers exposed to "second-hand" tobacco smoke are at increased risk of illness.
As a matter of policy, the University of California endeavors to maintain a safe and healthful environment for its faculty, students, and staff. I therefore ask each of you to develop, for local issuance, a policy on smoking that is responsive to the overall health issues associated with smoking, and appropriate to the different circumstances at each location.
Sincerely,
David Pierpont Gardner

California law prohibits smoking inside state-owned and state-occupied buildings, and creates a non-smoking zone within 20 feet of a main entrance, exit and operable windows of all public buildings. Smoking is prohibited inside all UC-owned, UC-leased and UC-occupied buildings and in all UC-operated passenger vehicles. Chancellors are authorized to promulgate campus policy on smoking on campus premises. For additonal information, see the 12/03/03 letter to Chancellors. |
