Academic Personnel Policy Research Titles

Enclosed are several revisions to Academic Personnel policy regarding University researchers in academic titles: Academic Personnel Policy (APM) Section 310 on the Professional Research series; a new APM Section 311 on the Project (e.g., Scientist) series and accompanying salary scales; a revised APM Section 620-14 on Off-Scale Salaries which includes new titles; and transition guidelines, all effective August 1, 2003.

Academic Personnel Manual Section 310 emphasizes that appointees to the Professional Research series perform research equivalent to ladder-rank faculty, engage in independent research, can with campus approval function as Principal Investigators, and have the major responsibility for their research programs.

Academic Personnel Manual Section 311 adds the new Project (e.g., Scientist) title for appointees who make significant and creative contributions to a research program in any academic discipline. Appointees are not required to carry out independent research and would not normally serve as Principal Investigators.
