CHANCELLORS
Dear Colleagues:
The two enclosed revised policies, the Policy on Student Conduct and Discipline and the Policy on Student Grievance Procedures, supersede Sections 100 and 110 of the Policies Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations, and Students issued to campuses on August 15, 1994, and are effective immediately.
These policies represent the second and third sections of the Policies to be reissued as an outcome of recent reviews by my office and the Office of General Counsel. (The first section of the Policies was reissued on April 25, 2002.) We will continue to reissue the remainder of the Policies section by section in revised form over the coming months as the review and consultation process for each is completed. This process, the campus component of which has been coordinated through the offices of the Vice Chancellors for Student Affairs and Undergraduate Affairs, has included extensive consultation with Registrars, Student Judicial Affairs Officers, the Assistant Vice Chancellors for Student Life, other administrative units, the systemwide Academic Senate, the local Senate Divisions, and student leaders.
Review and revision of the Policies is being undertaken at this time for several reasons: (1) to conform the Policies as needed to recent changes in the law, (2) to review the Policies for specific content in the light of current campus and Office of the President experience and priorities, and (3) to put into place a web-based process for publication and maintenance of the Policies that will both facilitate their more frequent revision and help ensure their wide availability in their most current form.
The two enclosed revised policies, the Policy on Student Conduct and Discipline and the Policy on Student Grievance Procedures, can also be found online at the following web address: http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/uwnews/aospol/toc.html.
Although I am enclosing paper copies of the two policies with this letter for your convenience, the policies as they appear online should always be considered by campuses as the copies of record.
Sincerely,
Richard C. Atkinson
President
