Dear Colleagues:

Enclosed are revisions to Staff Policy 60, Layoff and Reduction in Time from Professional and Support Staff Career Positions, and Staff Policy 2, Definition of Terms. The revisions to these policies reflect changes that are needed to provide consistency with a new approach to providing Supervisor titles. Under this new classification approach, a supervisor title would be created for each classification series, as opposed to each classification title. The revisions include:

• a change to the order of layoff so that layoff is effected by department, by class, and by salary grade (in the event a class may be assigned to different salary grades);

• a change to the right of recall so that recall is to a position in the same class, the same salary grade (in the event a class may be assigned to different salary grades) and the same department at the same or lesser percentage of time as the position held at the time of layoff; and

• a change to the definitions of upward, downward, and lateral reclassification so that reclassification is defined as the movement of an employee's current position to a different class or salary grade in the case of a downward or upward reclassification or to a different class having the same salary range maximum in the case of a lateral reclassification.

The new policies will be effective on April 1, 2002 and will be available soon on the Human Resources and Benefits website at www.ucop.edu/humres/policies.
