Special Fee Reduction Program for Nursing Employees

Dear Colleagues:

The State of California is currently experiencing a severe shortage of qualified nurses in all health care settings. University of California medical centers have also been greatly affected by the shortage. In order to respond to the critical need for more well-trained nursing staff, I have instituted a five-year exception to the reduced fee policy for nurses employed by the University of California who wish to complete their education. By this exception, career-status employees in the attached nursing titles will be able to complete their graduate level programs in a more timely fashion.

Under the current Reduced Fee Enrollment Policy, eligible employees are allowed a two-thirds' reduction of the University Registration and Educational Fees when enrolled in up to nine units or three courses per academic term. An exception to the Policy granted in 1990 allows regular status nurses to enroll in up to 12 units or 4 classes per academic term at the reduced fee levels. I am establishing a new limit that will permit certain regular status nurses to take up to sixteen units per academic term of graduate-level coursework at the reduced fee levels. This exception will sunset on January 1, 2008.

We will evaluate this special program on an annual basis. Vice President Michael Drake will be in touch regarding the details to be provided to the Office of the President.

Sincerely,

Richard C. Atkinson
President
