CHANCELLORS
LABORATORY DIRECTORS
VICE PRESIDENT--AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

Dear Colleagues:

The University of California nondiscrimination policies have been revised to clarify that discrimination on the basis of gender identity and pregnancy is prohibited. The affected policies and statements are:

The changes incorporate the addition of "gender identity" as a protected status under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (effective 1/1/2004). Discrimination on the basis of pregnancy is included within the category of discrimination based on "sex." We are adding the term "pregnancy" to these notices to facilitate understanding of University policy in this regard. The statement for those University publications which address student matters is being revised to provide consistency with the University's nondiscrimination in employment policies.

The revised employment policies supersede those issued on June 21, 2002, and the revised policy pertaining to publications regarding student matters supersedes the policy issued on March 3, 1994. All of these policies will soon be available on the At Your Service website. In addition, the Academic Personnel Policy 035 also will be available online at http://www.ucop.edu/acadadv/acadpers/apm/apm-035.pdf , and the Nondiscrimination Policy Statement for University of California Publications Regarding Student-Related Matters will be available online at http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/coordrev/ucpolicies/aos/ucappc.html.

Sincerely,

Robert C. Dynes
