October 12, 1967

CHANCELLORS:

As you know, there was published in the University Bulletin of October 2, 1967 a University-wide statement on conflict of interest. I am sending you copies of this statement and of an accompanying memorandum of explanation to the University faculty and staff. I would like to have you reproduce the policy statement and explanatory memorandum in sufficient quantity to send at least one or two copies to each Department Chairman and each Director of an Organized Research unit on your campus. In making this distribution, would you please ask the Chairmen and Directors to read the statement carefully for their own information and to take suitable steps to call it to the attention of their staff members, e.g., by posting it in a prominent place.

As indicated both in the bulletin item and in my letter of explanation to faculty and staff, the University's statement has been approved by the Federal Council for Science and Technology. This approval was given us with the understanding, and in my expectation, that the Chancellor of each campus will assume responsibility for the necessary administrative follow-up to insure that the announced policy is effectively administered.

H.R. Wellman
