TO THE FACULTY AND STAFF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA:
For the last several years, granting agencies of the Federal Government have become increasingly concerned about the question of conflicts of interest by University faculty and staff members. Several agencies have studied the possibility of incorporating an approved conflict of interest policy statement in all research contracts and grants.
Through the efforts of the American Association of University Professors and the American Council on Education, granting agencies have now agreed that approval of a statement on conflicts of interest by the Federal Office of Science and Technology will satisfy their requirements. Most other major institutions, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, Princeton, Chicago, and Minnesota, have recently adopted statements similar to the attached.
This University-wide Statement on Conflicts of Interest was prepared after consultation with the Academic Council and the University-wide Academic Senate Committee on Research. The statement has now been approved by the Federal Office of Science and Technology, and is hereby being distributed for the information of the faculty and staff.
