Office of the Vice President--Academic and Staff Personnel Relations

January 26, 1977

CHANCELLORS
LABORATORY DIRECTORS

Dear Colleagues:

The University has recently received several inquiries regarding University policy on discrimination in employment based upon an individual's sexual orientation. These inquiries have been directed both to the Office of the President and to campuses.

In response to these inquiries, President Saxon has stated that the University of California does not and will not discriminate in its employment relationship with any individual based on personal characteristics, including sexual orientaion, which are not job related. It is the University's policy to hire and promote individuals who are most qualified for open positions and qualifications are based only on directly job related criteria.

In addition to the above, the University, of course, does not discriminate on the basis of any legally impermissible grounds.

Sincerely,

Archie Kleingartner
Vice President
