CHANCELLORS
LABORATORY DIRECTORS
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT--BUSINESS AND FINANCE
VICE PRESIDENT--AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

Dear Colleagues:

University Policy on Seismic Safety

The enclosed University Policy on Seismic Safety is effective immediately and supersedes the Policy on the same subject issued May 17, 1988.

New language has been added to the Policy for clarification. The additional language clarifies the University's intent that the Policy applies to both the seismic upgrade of University structures in general and the seismic repair of University structures damaged in an earthquake, and it identifies the codes and guidelines by which the University is to undertake specific types of repair in the case of damage caused by an earthquake.

The Senior Vice President--Business and Finance is responsible in the Office of the President for coordination of seismic safety programs and may issue appropriate administrative guidelines as necessary. You may refer any issues about seismic safety problems to him.

Inserts to incorporate the Policy into the Facilities Manual will be distributed soon by Assistant Vice President Bocchicchio.

Cordially,

J. W. Peltason
