CHANCELLORS
Dear Colleagues:
As you know, there is a national movement to monitor the labor practices of multinational corporations that subcontract with domestic and foreign manufacturers to produce apparel bearing university logos and trademarks. After extensive internal consultation, the University of California Code of Conduct for Trademark Licensees (Code) was issued on August 3, 1998 and has been in effect since that time. When promulgated, it was noted that the UC Code was subject to amendment to reflect any subsequently-developed standards either by the University or by a national higher education organization whose code the University might choose to adopt.
Once promulgated, the UC Code became the subject of extensive discussion and debate by students and faculty members on our campuses. In response to their requests that the University's policy be strengthened, an Advisory Group of students, faculty and campus administrators was formed to review the Code and forward recommendations to Senior Vice President Kennedy. That group concluded their work in August 1999 and the revised Code was subsequently sent to the campuses for a final legal and administrative review.
I am pleased to forward the revised University Policy on the use of our trademarks and licenses and the accompanying revised Code.
Should you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Senior Vice President Kennedy.
Sincerely,
Richard C. Atkinson
President
