ADVISORY COMMITTEE NAMED TO SELECT NEW UCLA CHANCELLOR

A committee of Regents, faculty, students, staff and representatives of the alumni association and UCLA Foundation has been appointed by University of California President Richard C. Atkinson to advise him on the selection of a new chancellor for UCLA to succeed Charles E. Young, who is retiring in June 1997.

The 17-member committee will review a list of candidates for the position later this fall. It is anticipated that a recommendation for UCLA's seventh chancellor will be forwarded to the Regents next spring.

Young, 64, announced his retirement earlier this year from the job he has held for 28 years. He is the longest serving chancellor in the history of UC and currently the longest serving head of a university in the nation.

Regents on the advisory committee are Frank W. Clark, Leo S. Kolligian, Velma Montoya, Gerald L. Parsky and Tom Sayles. In addition, Board Chairman Tirso del Junco will serve on the committee, which will be chaired by Atkinson.

Faculty representatives from UCLA are Rosina M. Bercerra, professor of social welfare; Christopher Foote, professor of chemistry-biochemistry; and Leonard Kleinrock, professor of computer science. Also named to the committee are Marvin Goldberger, UC San Diego professor of physics and Duncan Luce, UC Irvine professor of cognitive science.

UCLA student members are John Du, undergraduate student body association president; and Chris Tymchuk, graduate students association president. UCLA alumni will be represented by Peter J. Taylor, alumni association president. The UCLA Foundation representative will be Roy H. Aaron, foundation president. The staff representative will be Peggy Sundstrom, business and finance director of organizational planning and performance.

During the initial stages of its work, the committee will meet at UCLA with representatives of the faculty, students, staff, alumni and community leaders to learn their views regarding selection of the next chancellor.

UCLA is the nation's largest research university founded in the 20th Century and ranks near the top academically. With a budget of $1.6 billion and an enrollment of more than 33,000 students, UCLA is the largest campus in the nine-campus system. It has 24 organized research units, including the UCLA Center for Health Sciences, and has more than 5,000 funded research projects in progress at any given time.
