STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT RICHARD C. ATKINSON ON
RESIGNATION OF UC BERKELEY CHANCELLOR CHANG-LIN TIEN

The departure of Dr. Chang-Lin Tien from the helm of the Berkeley campus next year will be a loss to the University of California. It will mark seven years of illustrious service by one of the great leaders in thehistory of the university and the Berkeley campus.

Chancellor Tien, a gifted scholar of international renown, is admired and respected throughout this country and abroad for his contributions to higher education. He has been the most prolific fund-raiser in Berkeley campus history and has maintained the stellar quality of the Berkeley faculty despite the fiscal difficulties of the past several years. His efforts in sustaining Berkeley's academic standing are reflected in the latest National Research Council's rankings of public and private university graduate programs. UC Berkeley had 36 of its 37 programs ranked in the top 10, placing it first among public and private institutions across the country.

Throughout his tenure, Chang-Lin has been a strong and effective advocate for the faculty, a friend and counselor to students, and a supportive colleague to staff. He is an avid and energetic booster of the campus who has worked tirelessly and effectively with alumni, donors and friends of the campus.

We owe Chancellor Tien a tremendous debt of gratitude for his many accomplishments which have benefited the Berkeley campus, the entire university, the state and higher education throughout the nation.

I consider Chang-Lin a close personal friend, and while I very much will regret his departure, I understand and respect his decision. I look forward to Chancellor Tien's continued leadership of the Berkeley campus in the months ahead, and I have every expectation that he and Di-Hwa will remain active members of the campus and university community for years to come.
