ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO SELECT NEW BERKELEY CHANCELLOR NAMED
A committee made up of Regents, faculty, students, staff and representatives of the alumni association and UC Berkeley Foundation
has been selected by University of California President Richard C. Atkinson to advise him on choosing a new chancellor for the
Berkeley campus to succeed Chang-Lin Tien, who will retire in June 1997.
A list of candidates for the position will be reviewed by the 17-member committee later this fall . It is anticipated that a recommendation
for Berkeley's eighth chancellor will be forwarded to the Regents next spring.
Tien, 61, appointed chancellor in 1990, was the first Asian American to head a major research university in the nation. A professor of
mechanical engineering, former vice chancellor for research at UC Berkeley and executive vice chancellor at UC Irvine, Tien has been
a member of the UC faculty for 37 years.
Regents named to the advisory committee are Ward Connerly, John G. Davies, Meredith J. Khachigian, Howard H. Leach and David S. Lee. In addition, Board Chairman Tirso del Junco will serve on the committee, which will be chaired by Atkinson.
Faculty representatives from UC Berkeley are William G. Oldham, professor of electrical engineering and computer science; Carol J.
Clover, professor of Scandinavian and rhetoric, and C. Bradley Moore, professor of chemistry. Also named to the committee are
Francisco J. Ayala, UC Irvine Bren Professor of Biology and William M. Wara, UC San Francisco professor of radiology, oncology
and pediatrics.
UC Berkeley student members are Grant Harris, associated students president and Charles Bertsch, graduate assembly chair. UC Berkeley alumni will be represented by Regent Richard L. Russell, who is also president of the alumni association. The Berkeley Foundation representative will be Edward H. Peterson, board of trustees chair. The staff representative will be Nadesan Permaul, director of public safety and transportation.
The committee will meet during its initial stages with representatives of the faculty, students, staff, alumni and community leaders at
UC Berkeley to learn their views regarding selection of the new chancellor.
UC Berkeley, founded in 1868 and the first campus in the UC system, is known internationally for academic excellence. In a 1995
study by the National Research Council, 35 of Berkeley's 36 doctoral programs were ranked in the top 10 nationally, the highest
percentage of any institution in the nation. Its distinguished faculty includes eight Nobel laureates, 13 National Medal of Science
honorees and 14 MacArthur Fellows. Berkeley has an enrollment of nearly 30,000 students and an annual budget of $819 million.
