Statement on the Resolution Concerning
Future Admissions, Employment and Contracting Policies

On the agenda for the Board of Regents' May 16th meeting at UC San Francisco is Regents Item 28 by Regent Hopkinson. This agenda item is consistent with my statement at the March Regents meeting, at which I expressed confidence that action would be taken on SP-1 and SP-2 in the near future.

Now that the time for action on SP-1 and SP-2 has arrived, I wish to express my hope as chairman of the Board of Regents that our members in their deliberations will form a consensus for a course of action that will be in the best interests of the university and the people of California.

I believe the resolution (RE-28) provides such a consensus. It affirms the Regents' support of the state constitution and our commitment to providing access to and maintaining the excellence of the University of California.
