Statement on the Resolution Concerning
Future Admissions, Employment and Contracting Policies
by Regent
Judith L. Hopkinson
Following the adoption of SP-1 and
SP-2, many people have formed the perception that they are unwelcome
at our public university. I believe now is the time for the Regents
to seek common ground to dispel this perception.
I am introducing a resolution on Wednesday
(May 16) to eliminate SP-1 and SP-2. This action is significant
because it will also send a message reaffirming the University's
commitment to enroll a student body representative of our diverse
state and prepare California's public school students for the opportunity
of a UC education.
At the same time, the University of
California will comply with Proposition 209, the voter-approved
measure that prohibits the use of preferences in admissions, employment
and contracting practices.
It may surprise some people that Ward
Connerly, Bill Bagley and I agree on the resolution being introduced
at the Regents' meeting. While coming at this issue from different
perspectives, we believe it is in the best interest of the University
and the people of California. I hope this resolution will have the
broad support of my fellow Regents.
