Faculty Review of UC Admissions Policies

May 9, 2001

TO THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA

FROM SECRETARY OF THE REGENTS LEIGH TRIVETTE

President Atkinson asks that in considering this resolution (RE-28), you keep in mind that, as he informed The Regents in his letter of February 16, he has requested the faculty to recommend two changes in the University of California’s admissions policies: first, that the University require only standardized tests that assess mastery of specific subject matter rather than undefined notions of “aptitude”; and second, that all the campuses continue to move away from admissions processes that rely on quantitative formulas. This would involve replacing the two-tier system currently in place with a unitary review process that looks at students in a comprehensive way.

The faculty’s review is currently underway. RE-28 calls for retaining present academic criteria for admission until such time as this faculty review is completed. The faculty’s recommendations, which will guide the revision of admissions criteria, are expected to be presented to The Regents in late 2001 or early 2002.
