Martin M. Chemers
was appointed interim campus provost and executive vice chancellor at the University of California, Santa Cruz effective December 1, 2003. From April 2004 to February 2005, he served as Acting Chancellor. Chemers came to UC Santa Cruz in 1995 from Claremont McKenna College to accept an appointment as the dean of Social Sciences and professor of psychology. Prior to this appointment he was the Henry R. Kravis Professor of Leadership and Organizational Psychology and director of the Kravis Leadership Institute at Claremont McKenna College. He was previously on the faculties of the Universities of Illinois, Delaware, Washington, and Utah where he was chair of the Department of Psychology. Since receiving his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Illinois in 1968, he has been an active researcher and has published seven books and over sixty articles on leadership, culture and organizational diversity. His book Improving Leadership Effectiveness: The Leader Match Concept (written with Fred Fiedler) is widely used as a basis for leadership training. His most recent book, An Integrative Theory of Leadership, was published in 1997. The Japanese edition was published in 1999.
