Simao Avila
is labor and employment counsel for the Office of General Counsel, University of California. He was previously a partner with Littler Mendelson, the nation’s largest labor and employment law firm, where he represented private and public sector clients on nearly all aspects of employment and labor law. He advised Human Resources personnel on preventative steps to avoid claims of negligent hiring, supervision and retention, claims of discrimination, (sex, sexual orientation, race, age, medical condition and disability), wrongful discharge, breaches of contract and implied covenants and compliance with affirmative action. Avila lecturers at Leland Stanford University Law School (Gould Center) and has taught at University of California Boalt Hall on negotiations and ADR. To assist employers with one of those difficult contemporary challenges, he co-authored a handbook entitled, Terror and Violence in the Workplace. Avila obtained his J.D. degree from the University of Santa Clara School of Law in 1983.
