ABSTRACT:

The project
team will develop interactive
teaching activities that can be
used in geoscience classes that
will instill curiosity in students
that ultimately will refine their
ability to systematically define
and test scientific hypotheses.
These activities will focus on
developing the concepts of: (1)
estimating measurement errors
and (2) the exploration of multi-dimensional
data. Both of these concepts are
difficult for students to fully
understand if not properly presented.
The team proposes to update and
standardize two of the most popular
web-based activities originally
designed by educational specialists
at the Southern California Earthquake
Center (SCEC- http://www.scec.org/education/).
To assure that
the end products that are developed
will be optimal for use in undergraduate
and graduate level classes, videoconferencing
technologies will be used to create
a virtual collaboration
between professors at UCSB and
UCI and the development teams
at UCSD and SCEC/USC. This project
will act as a catalyst for future
designs of geoscience teaching
activities and development of
interactive visual teaching tools
for the classroom.

ABSTRACT:

The funds will
be used to support the development
of a larger Intercampus Collaborative
Grant to bring a searchable database
of recommended childrens
literature to all UC campuses.
Developed by prospective teachers
and students enrolled in courses
on childrens literature,
this unique resource combines
an innovative use of technology
as a teaching device and the creation
of a useful resource for many
members of the UC community.
A pilot database
has been prototyped in conjunction
with the McHenry Library at UC
Santa Cruz. This feasibility grant
is the first step in expanding
the project to all UC campuses.
Students at both UC Santa Cruz
and UC Berkeley will help create,
and be able to access, a database
of culturally diverse and sensitive
books to support instruction in
K-8 classrooms.

ABSTRACT:

This proposal
seeks preliminary funding to plan
the development of a digital archive
of postwar political graphics
for use in research and teaching.
Faculty from history, art history,
information studies, ethnic studies
and American studies will participate.
The basis of this digital archive
will be the 50,000 posters from
the collection of the Center for
the Study of Political Graphics
(CSPG). Initial planning tasks
will include organizing a priority
list of collection subjects for
digitization and uploading, developing
an expansion strategy for additional
subject disciplines and campuses,
and planning the development of
a digital archive and online interface
linking uploaded images and curricular
materials.
