Reynolds, Dwight
(UCSB) |
| CAMPUSES: |
| |
UCB, UCSB, and
UCSC |
| DESCRIPTION: |
| |
Pedagogical
Concern: Arabic language courses
are available only at UCB, UCLA,
and UCSB, and yet there is demand
across the system.
Planning Strategy: Faculty
at UCB, UCLA, and UCSB will develop
a mechanism to offer Arabic language
instruction to the remaining 6 campuses.
UCSB will host a one-day planning
conference to initiate discussions
with UCB and UCLA faculty for collaboration. |

INVESTIGATOR: |
| |
Crow, Ben (UCSC) |
| CAMPUSES: |
| |
UCB, UCLA, UCSC,
UCSD |
| DESCRIPTION: |
| |
Pedagogical
Concern: Some campuses do not
have the expertise and resources
used at UCSC to develop a Web-based
atlas for presentations in large
courses.
Planning Strategy: UCB, UCLA,
and UCSD faculty will meet at UCSC
to develop a pilot version of an
atlas. |

Sinervo, Barry
(UCSC) |
| CAMPUSES: |
| |
UCB, UCLA, UCSC,
UCSB |
| DESCRIPTION: |
| |
Pedagogical
Concern: Undergraduate biology
courses do not make full use of
multimedia and simulation environment
software applications in teaching
modules.
Planning Strategy: UCB and
UCSC faculty will integrate and
test interactive authoring packages
to create teaching materials that
could be used for undergraduate
biology courses. |

| PRINCIPAL
INVESTIGATOR: |
| |
De Ley, Paul
(UCR) |
| CAMPUSES: |
| |
UCR and UCD |
| DESCRIPTION: |
| |
Pedagogical
Concern: Students in large introductory
classes in the biological sciences
lack access to quality microscopes
and lab specimens, and, therefore,
they are not able to develop their
microscopy skills.
Planning Strategy: UCD and
UCR faculty will meet for two days
to discuss prototype production
and Website design using Video Capture
and Editing microscopy to reproduce
video clips of microscope specimens
at high magnification. |

Copeland, Willis
(UCSB) |
| CAMPUSES: |
| |
UCI and UCSB
|
| DESCRIPTION: |
| |
Pedagogical
Concern: UCI and UCSB teacher
education programs use electronic
portfolios and online mediated discussions
for teacher training, and yet these
tools are customized for each campus
and cannot be shared.
Planning Strategy: Faculty
at UCI and UCSB will convene a meeting
for representatives from all UC
Teacher Education Programs to explore
the feasibility of making various
IT applications for teacher training
available across the system. |

| Web-Based
Palliative Care Education |
| PRINCIPAL
INVESTIGATOR: |
| |
Meyers, Frederick
(UCD) |
| CAMPUSES: |
| |
UCD, UCLA, and
UCSF |
| DESCRIPTION: |
| |
Pedagogical
Concern: AB 487 requires that
physicians and surgeons complete
a course in pain management and
the treatment of terminally ill
and dying patients. There are insufficient
hours of instruction in palliative
care available to students in UC
medical schools.
Planning Strategy: Faculty
at UCD School of Medicine will contact
faculty at UCLA and UCSF to discuss
interest in developing Web-based
training modules in palliative care
that could be shared among the campuses.

Woolley, John
(UCSB) |
| CAMPUSES: |
| |
UCDC, UCSB, UCSD
|
| DESCRIPTION: |
| |
Pedagogical
Concern: Large classes in Political
Science limit attention to individual
learning needs. UCDC and UCSD need
instructional resources to tailor
courses to their programs.
Planning Strategy: Faculty
will meet at UCSB to adapt a Web-based
UCSB instructional resource to be
used at three campuses. |
