UC Santa Barbara broke new ground on May 8 when it participated in a " Virtual Masterclass and Performance " with Santa Barbara City College. The performance represented a pioneering use of music and technology, allowing the musicians to perform in real time from two separate venues.
UCSB music professor Anne Epperson taught a masterclass in front of a live audience at City College to a flutist and a pianist located at UCSB's Kerr Hall, 10 miles away. The musicians at UCSB were projected to City College via a large, onstage screen using state-of-the-art technology developed by Los Angeles-based RoseTel™ System. The pianist at UCSB then performed a duet with a baritone at City College.
"This event is truly historic for two reasons. First, to provide the ability for classical musicians to collaborate in real time is difficult, but to enable a synchronous duet performance is groundbreaking," says Kevin Barron, an Information Systems Director at UCSB who directed and helped produce the event. "The linear audio transceiver provided by RoseTel has an imperceptible latency of less than 10 milliseconds and provides the CD-mastering fidelity requisite for this event. Equally important, this event demonstrates what is now possible in the way of music education. The Digital California Project provides the bandwidth into our school districts that will enable this high caliber music instruction to under-served communities throughout the state."
