Federal

$4,000,000 US announced for Biomass research

The U.S. DOE has announced the availability of up to $4,000,000 US in funding to U.S. universities for the research and development of biomass conversion technologies. The DOE anticipates granting awards for 12 projects that improve the conversion of biomass to advanced biofuels through biochemical, thermochemical, and chemical processes, and are focused on lowering production costs while increasing yields and productivity. The maximum award amount would be $1,250,000 US with a university cost share of at least 20%. Applications are due June 2, 2008.

    In 2007, AB 118, the California Alternative and Renewable Fuel, Vehicle Technology, Clean Air, and Carbon Reduction Act of 2007 was signed into law. AB 118 provides about $200 million annually through 2015 for new programs to develop and deploy technology and alternative and renewable fuels and fund air quality improvement projects. Implementation of AB 118 is just beginning.
