Welcome to the Special Research Programs' (SRP)
website. SRP comprises three state-funded research programs
that target high-priority health issues in California - HIV/AIDS,
breast cancer, and tobacco-related disease. Each program awards
grants to California scientists to investigate these diseases, which
are responsible for substantial human suffering and staggering financial
costs in our state. The goals of the research are to enhance understanding
of the causes of these diseases and to develop more effective approaches
to preventing and treating them.
Together the three programs have awarded approximately $30 million
annually for 150 new grants, and monitored approximately 450 active
grants. Research has been funded in a wide range of disciplines,
including public health, public policy, epidemiology, behavioral
science, clinical science, and basic biomedical science (e.g., cellular
and molecular biology, immunology, pathology, virology).
SRP is located in Oakland at the University of California, Office
of the President, which is the headquarters for the ten-campus system.
SRP is a department in the Academic & Health Affairs division,
which is led by the Provost. As the state's official research arm,
the University administers the three programs as a public service
and public trust. Although UC is the administrator, awards are not
restricted to scientists at UC campuses. SRP has awarded grants
to approximately 60 not-for-profit and for-profit research institutions
and community-based organizations in California in addition to UC
campuses.
Each of the programs' Websites includes descriptions of its history,
grants awarded, and accomplishments, as well as Calls for Applications
and Annual Reports.
