Welcome to the Special Research Programs' (SRP) website. SRP comprises three state-funded research programs that target high-priority health issues in California - HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, and tobacco-related disease. Each program awards grants to California scientists to investigate these diseases, which are responsible for substantial human suffering and staggering financial costs. The goals of the research are to enhance understanding of the causes of these diseases, and to develop more effective approaches to preventing and treating them. During recent years, the three programs' annual commitments for research have ranged from $38 million to $86 million. Research has been funded in a wide range of disciplines, including public health, public policy the law, epidemiology, clinical and behavioral medicine, and basic biomedical science (e.g., cellular and molecular biology, immunology, pathology, virology). SRP is a department in the Office of the Vice President for Health Affairs in the University of California's systemwide headquarters, the Office of the President. The University, the state's official research arm, administers the three programs as a public service and public trust. Although the UC administers the programs, grant awards are not restricted to UC scientists. SRP has awarded grants to 50 not-for-profit and for-profit research institutions and community-based organizations in California in addition to the nine UC campuses. Each of the programs' websites includes detailed descriptions of the program's history and activities, including Calls for Applications and Annual Reports. |
