Library Services and Research Resources Available to UCOP Staff

Although most UC Office of the President staff are not located on a campus, an impressive array of library services and research resources is available to them through their UCOP Internet connection. Most are also available off-site via UCOP's and UC Berkeley's proxy server services (see “Off-Site Access” below).

Berkeley Library Cards for UCOP Staff
All UCOP staff are eligible for UC Berkeley library cards. A Berkeley library card gives UCOP staff members the same library use privileges as campus staff have. A Berkeley library card also provides other benefits, such as the use of the Request (Interlibrary Loan), BAKER (Document Delivery) and proxy server services.

You can apply for a Berkeley library card at the Doe Library’s Privileges Desk (Floor 1). You must apply in person and present a current UCOP identification card. For more information: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/services/borrowing.html

UCOP staff may make use of the following services and resources. However, a UC Berkeley library card provides additional benefits for some services.

Melvyl Catalog
The Melvyl Catalog contains records for materials – including books, journals, movies, maps, music scores and recordings, computer files, dissertations and government documents – held by the libraries of UC’s 10 campuses, along with other California institutions. All publication dates are included. The database contains over 25 million records, and most campuses update their holdings on a weekly basis.

E-journals: Records in the Melvyl Catalog for journals that include an "Available Online" link and a "Restricted to UC campuses" notation in the holdings information may be accessed online from a UCOP IP address or via UCOP's or Berkeley’s proxy server service.

More online resources are available via Berkeley’s proxy server than UCOP's proxy server because the campus' service allows access to any online resources that the campus has licensed locally in addition to all systemwide-licensed resources.

UC-eLinks: While using any of the databases available to UCOP staff, look for the UC-eLinks buttons – – in your search results displays. UC-eLinks provides links to the services available for a specific item. UC-eLinks provides an easy way for users to move from an article or book citation to the electronic version of the item; check to see if the item is available in the campus library; request items not available on campus; or ask a reference question.

Other CDL Services
The UC system’s California Digital Library provides other research resources that are made available to the UC community and the general public:

Online Archive of California provides access to collections of digital materials, such as manuscripts, photographs and art, held in the libraries, museums and archives across California through a searchable database.

Counting California offers “one-stop shopping” for government data and statistics about California.

Calisphere is University of California's free public gateway to over 150,000 digitized primary sources materials selected from the libraries and museums of the UC campuses, and from a variety of cultural heritage organizations. The subject focus is the history and culture of California and its role in national and world history.

eScholarship Editions provides access to digital texts and monographs, including more than 1,400 UC Press titles. A significant number of the electronic books are available to the public free of charge.

eScholarship Publications showcases eScholarship program publications, including interactive publications from the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, legacy online journals such as the Dermatology Online Journal, and monographs from the UC International and Area Studies Digital Collection.

eScholarship Repository is a free, open-access repository infrastructure that supports the full range of scholarly output, from pre-publication materials to journals and peer-reviewed series, by offering UC departments direct control of publishing.
