Narrator: This is Science Today. Chances are high that at some point in your life, you may be placed in a nursing home for long or short term care. That's why Dr. Kathryn Borgenicht of the University of California, San Francisco says it's important those especially 60 and over start thinking about their options.
Borgenicht: The thing that you need to be paying the most attention to is your quality of life, the things that make you enjoy life and if it means going to the day center or if it means having your daughter come over or if it means getting a particular kind of meal or getting transportation once a week to go somewhere, those are the kinds of things to really concentrate on.
Narrator: Borgenicht says there are alternatives to expensive nursing homes.
Borgenicht: There are all sorts of different kinds of day centers out there that provide a variety of different services and sometimes can be extremely helpful for keeping people at home because they'll provide nursing care, they may provide some rehab, they may provide some social service.
Narrator: And they may provide financial and emotional relief. For Science Today, I'm Larissa Branin.
