Narrator: This is Science Today. The role of spirituality in the healing process is becoming a hot topic. University of California, San Francisco AIDS physician, Jason Tokumoto, offers spirituality support groups to his patients. Tokumoto says the word spirituality can mean different things to different people, but mainly it means hope.
Tokumoto: In my experience, the patients that do have a spiritual part to themselves or feel that the spiritual aspect is very important to them seem to do much better. To me, it makes sense because if you have a positive attitude, you would want to get better and so you would take care of yourself better.
Narrator: Tokumoto says in the medical profession, spirituality, is now becoming more recognized as an important part of the healing process.
Tokumoto: There was a recent article about this whole area and I think they surveyed something like twenty-three medical schools an it was over seventy percent that felt that this whole area really needs to be part of the patient's care.
