Narrator: This is Science Today. A recent study has found that regular alcohol consumption plays a significant role in survival after a heart attack. Cardiologist Vince Figueredo of the University of California, San Francisco says the protective ingredient in alcohol is ethanol...
Figueredo: It puts a protective mechanism into place thatís activated at the time of a heart attack, and therefore reduces the amount of injury or the size of the heart attack and at least in our experimental studies, it appears that it halves the size of a heart attack.
Narrator: But Figueredo: says their study is in no way condoning alcohol abuse..
Figueredo: The purpose of our research is to understand this protective mechanism that regular alcohol consumption does put into place and if we can figure out on a cellular level what that protection is, then we can develop safe, non-alcoholic therapies for patients they can take.
Narrator: Since this could take up to a decade to do, Figueredo: says if you do drink, do it in moderation. For Science Today, Iím Larissa Branin.
