Narrator: This is Science Today. A new research center has joined the race to develop a cutting-edge motor prosthesis that can be controlled by thought alone. The newly inaugurated Center for Neural Engineering and Prostheses unites engineers from the University of California, Berkeley, with neuroscientists from the University of California, San Francisco.
Carmena: The center basically combines one of the best neurosurgery departments in the world with the best college of engineering in the world...so it's like the best of the best all in the Bay area.
Narrator: Co-director Jose Carmena explains that the center's main thrust will be the development and clinical testing of durable brain implants that can communicate directly with robotic arms, legs and even computer cursors. The center will also capitalize on the joint bioengineering graduate program between UC Berkeley and UCSF.
