How to be mindful of your salt intake

Narrator:    This is Science Today. About 80 percent of our salt consumption comes from processed, prepared foods. Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, an epidemiologist at the University of California, San Francisco says this includes foods that people don't often consider ...

Bibbins-Domingo:     Like breads and cereals, which probably make up the majority of the salt that we take in every day. The turkey sandwich and a slice of bread has about 10 percent of your daily value of salt. A second slice of bread like you're making a sandwich gets you to 20 percent. The condiments that you spread on, the ketchup, the mayonnaise, the mustard all have salt in it. And then if you put cheese on as well, you can with a fairly healthy looking sandwich, get to about 50 percent of your daily value of salt without even opening the bag of chips.

Narrator:    Bibbins-Domingo found that just a slight reduction in our salt intake could significantly reduce heart attacks, strokes and deaths each year.

Bibbins-Domingo:    I tell people to be mindful of the types of foods that have salt in them.
