Narrator: This is Science Today. Get With the Guidelines is a hospital-based program that optimizes care for coronary artery disease, heart failure and stroke patients. It puts together the expertise of the American heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals. Dr. Gregg Fonarow, a professor of cardiovascular medicine at UCLA, was instrumental in the implementation of the program.
Fonarow: We have over four hundred U.S. hospitals that are now participating in Get With the Guidelines heart failure and over a hundred thousand patients that have been entered. We are seeing very important improvements in the quality of care and in addition, we're continuing to collect data that we can utilize for studies and better understanding some of the remaining barriers for the use of evidence-based therapy to understand the relationship between newer therapies and clinical outcomes. So, this represents really an incredible opportunity to further improve the quality of care for patients with heart failure nationwide.
